What should I do first if a pipe bursts?
Shut off the water right away at the main shutoff valve — usually near the meter or where the line enters the house. On a well system, turn off the breaker for the well pump. If water is near outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel, stay out of standing water and only turn off power at the breaker if you can reach it safely. My water heater is leaking. What should I do?
Turn off the cold water supply valve at the top of the heater to stop more water from flowing in. For an electric heater, switch off its breaker; for a gas heater, turn the gas control to off.
